CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has weighed in on the U.S. presidential race, saying he prefers President Barack Obama.
"If I were American, I'd vote for Obama," Chavez said in a televised interview that aired Sunday.
The Venezuelan leader called Obama "a good guy" and said if the U.S. president were a Venezuelan, "I think ... he'd vote for Chavez."
Chavez is running for re-election, seeking another six years in office in an Oct. 7 vote. Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in his November re-election bid.
Venezuela has had tense relations with the U.S. government for years, even though the United States remains the top buyer of oil from the country.
"I wish we could begin a new period of normal relations with the government of the United States," Chavez said in the interview on the Venezuelan television channel Televen.
Chavez and Obama shook hands at a 2009 summit, but relations have since cooled.
The U.S. Embassy in Caracas has been without an ambassador since July 2010, with Chavez rejecting Washington's nominee for ambassador, Larry Palmer, and accusing him of making disrespectful remarks about Venezuela's government. That led Washington to revoke the visa of the Venezuelan ambassador to the U.S.

BEIJING (AP) ? A business survey shows China's manufacturing declined again in September, though the slowdown might be bottoming out.
HSBC Corp.'s latest purchasing managers' index, based on a survey of more than 400 companies, was 47.9 for September, slightly up from 47.6 in August. The index measures manufacturing activities on a 100-point scale on which numbers below 50 show a contraction.
The HSBC report shows China's manufacturing contracted for the 11th straight month in September, as new export orders fell at the sharpest rate in 42 months amid weak international demand.
HSBC's China economist Hongbin Qu said in an accompanying statement that "the sharper contraction of new export orders and the lingering pressures on job markets mean that Beijing should step up easing to support growth and employment."

It feels like it was only yesterday that we were praising Google for giving us access to a plethora of handy, everyday tools -- oh wait, it was yesterday. At any rate, today the folks from Mountain View are back with more travel-friendly software for you to enjoy, announcing that its useful Flight Search service is now fully-optimized for use with, as Google points out, tablets such as its own Nexus 7 and, naturally, Cupertino's iPad. Jet-setters can see the changes now by simply hitting the Flights link below, and with the dearest holidays just around the corner, now is probably a good time to make use of that "lowest fare" tool.

I have been wracking my brain (and my computer) trying to figure out the source for this recipe! I saw this Pin on Pinterest and thought it sounded great? but when I clicked through it went to a white cheddar chicken pasta recipe. While that also sounds fabulous, it?s not what I was looking for this time. I finally found the recipe, though, on The Girl Who Ate Everything. Yay!
I scaled down the recipe a bit because I had only two chicken breasts plus a couple tenderloins (what came in our CSA box), and tweaked the timing so the cream cheese wouldn?t cook to long and curdle. So I pulled together this:
To make your super easy supper:
This was so, so good, and is definitely going in our supper rotation!
Do y?all have any suggestions for more slow cooker meals for fall?

Walden Media
Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal in "'Won't Back Down."
By David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
The jury is still out on a solution to the national education system crisis, but the verdict is delivered with a heavy hand and a stacked deck in the formulaic "Won?t Back Down." Simplifying complex school-reform hurdles into tidy inspirational clich?s while demonizing both teachers? unions and bureaucracy-entrenched education boards, the movie addresses timely issues but eschews shading in favor of blunt black and white. It?s old-school Lifetime fodder dressed up in Hollywood trappings.
In the broadest terms, Daniel Barnz?s film, co-written with Brin Hill, is a dramatized counterpart to Davis Guggenheim?s 2010 documentary "Waiting for Superman,? which pointed to charter schools as the only way out of the public-education quagmire. That film was partly financed by Walden Media, the backers of this Fox release, suggesting that the problem of underperforming inner-city classrooms is a pet cause for the company.
VIDEO: "Won't Back Down" trailer
In Barnz and Hill?s by-the-numbers screenplay -- which trumpets that vaguest of catch-all legitimization banners, ?Inspired by actual events? -- the catalyst for much-needed change at Adams Elementary School in Pittsburgh is crusading Everymom Jamie Fitzpatrick (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Her dyslexic daughter Malia (Emily Alyn Lind) is stuck in a class with a teacher (Nancy Bach) who is a monster of job-secure complacency, and a principal (Bill Nunn) too mired in unionized paralysis to help.
A single mother working two jobs and unable to afford tuition at better alternatives, Jamie bones up on the ?fail-safe? maneuver, the film?s equivalent of the parent trigger law. That controversial legislation -- on the books in some form in a handful of states and under consideration in many others -- allows concerned parents and teachers to intervene in floundering public schools. In the film?s example, it primarily means getting past restrictive union controls and a do-nothing education board.
The absurd idea that the parents of an entire student body are too apathetic to worry about their kids? education until Jamie comes along like some rocker-chick Erin Brockovich is just one of the film?s condescendingly movie-ish conceits. Played with grating one-note pluckiness by Gyllenhaal, Jamie overcompensates for her lack of a college education by self-consciously sprinkling her conversations with words like ?trepidatious.? Yet, darned if this scrappy dynamo doesn?t get the whole community galvanized.
Even more objectionable is the depiction of the burned-out staff at Adams. They mill around in the break room bitching about teachers like Malia?s, saying, ?The only thing the district does well is protect its mistakes.? But the general lack of motivation is palpable, and even Nona Alberts (Viola Davis), a committed educator like her mother before her, has lost faith in her profession.
The only exception at Adams appears to be Teach For America do-gooder and soulful hunk Michael Perry (Oscar Isaac), who leads his class in line-dancing numbers, accompanying them on ukulele as they sing about ?Goin? to College.? Naturally, this makes Jamie swoon.
A perfunctory romance blooms, but Michael vacillates in his support for Jamie?s cause. Preferring to focus his commitment on his class only, he is reluctant to stray from union-sanctioned guidelines. Jamie?s sole consistent ally is Nona, who risks alienating the entire teaching staff, including her feisty pal Breena (Rosie Perez). While she?s worn down by the challenges of a broken system, not to mention the end of her marriage and the learning difficulties of her own son (Dante Brown), Nona reluctantly gets with the empowerment program.
However, this is another one of those movies where a tenacious white person leads the charge to save inner-city kids, achieving a miracle transformation through sheer force of will. While Nona is the insider with the education experience, she?s second fiddle throughout the fight, getting much of her dignity not from the script but from Davis, who could do this role in her sleep.
In order to provide a gossamer-thin semblance of balance, Barnz and Hill plant one jaded idealist apiece in the teachers? union and the education board. That essentially leaves Holly Hunter and Marianne Jean-Baptiste playing variations on the same role, both of them primed for redemption as they rediscover their buried convictions. Elsewhere, the opposition is reduced -- most notably by Ned Eisenberg?s belligerently uncompromising union chief -- to a force of obstinate blindness as to what?s good for the kids, and for the majority of disillusioned teachers.
Given the disingenuous way in which this lumbering movie pushes obvious buttons and manipulates the audience?s emotional investment while conveniently skimming the issues, it?s a mystery how some of these names got roped in.
Following her breakout work in "The Help," this is a particularly unhappy use of Davis? considerable talents. Hunter also is too smart an actor to be stuck playing the transparent construct of a compromised Norma Rae. Lance Reddick (The Wire) is given an entirely thankless role as Nona?s businesslike departing husband, while Ving Rhames is on hand literally to deliver a speech as principal of the exemplary Rosa Parks Elementary School during a lottery draw for new students.
That scene is one of many such preachy interludes in a dumbed-down agenda film that veers shamelessly between didacticism and soap.

A recent repost says, in many countries there are many people who are affected by various dental problems. It happens to people from all age groups, right from children to elderly people. There are many reasons why people are affected by these dental problems. The reason could be their daily food habits and the care towards their dental health. However, apart from diseases there are people who come with other problems like teeth whitening, and root canals to an Austin dentist. Some of these dentists are said to even offer painless treatment for their patients. They may educate their patients on prevention of diseases before it gets worse.

Wireless device certifications can sometimes give away a little more of a company's game plan than intended. Case in point: a China Compulsory Certification for the iPhone 5. The expected A1429 variant has been given initial clearance on its way to China Unicom, but there's also a previously unseen, CDMA2000-based A1442 iPhone with a similar rubber stamp. With the iPhone 4S already on the market for a CDMA-only China Telecom, it doesn't take much to suggest that the A1442 represents Apple's taller, faster smartphone already prepared for the same carrier. Neither edition of the iPhone 5 is imminent without the equally important network and radio clearances. Getting the ball rolling on multiple variants so soon after the initial launch, however, raises the chance that we'll see the iPhone 5 on more than one Chinese provider faster than the iPhone 4S took to arrive the last time around.

OSLO (Reuters) - A Nigerian man who has fought against environmental destruction on behalf of poor Africans has won an annual Norwegian human rights award that sometimes presages the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Rafto Foundation said on Thursday it awarded Nnimmo Bassey, 54, its 2012 prize to recognize his fight for the right to life, health, food and water, particularly for those disadvantaged by the global oil industry.
"Nnimmo Bassey links human rights to the climate by demonstrating how climate change has the greatest effect on the world's most vulnerable people, the very people who have contributed least to the problem in the first place," the Bergen-based Rafto Foundation said in a statement.
The award comes as East Africa is going through a boom in oil and gas exploration and as several west African nations prepare to extract hydrocarbons.
"Nnimmo Bassey points to the injustices Africa has had to tolerate through the way the rich world has for many years exploited the continent's large resources of fossil fuels," the foundation said.
Bassey is the chair of Friends of the Earth International, a grassroots environmental organization.
Four previous Rafto laureates - Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi, East Timor's Jose Ramos-Horta, South Korea's Kim Dae-jung and Iran's Shirin Ebadi - went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in subsequent years.
Bassey in 2010 was also the winner of the Right Livelihood Award, which bills itself as the Alternative Nobel Prize.

To improve and maintain the quality of one?s health, strong bones, bone density, optimal bone mass and bone renewal are all topics that one must concentrate on. The basic minerals and vitamin D and other important bone building components are really important to provide nutrition to you as well as your bones. To maintain that bone health, science has come up with various strategies and options, which include bone health supplements.
There are many bone health supplements available today. In fact, your thyroid hormone, insulin, and blood sugar metabolism are all linked to a healthy bone function.
We must also know that calcium is a key nutrient for your bones to stay strong. We all talk about proteins but often forget that calcium is an essential building block for lifelong bone health too. In fact not only men but even women should have a huge intake of calcium. Everyone can benefit from eating calcium-rich foods. But if you limit yourself to foods that deplete calcium then you can always substitute it with calcium bone health supplements.
Now coming to joint pain supplements that are useful to us today. Joint pain is a constant headache in many people?s lives. One either suffers from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Many others suffer with joint pain from sports injuries, overuse, being overweight or strain from excess exercise. There are many commonly recommended supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin. They are often believed to have replaced damaged joints. However, there has often been conflict in terms of joint pain supplements as some agree they work, others say they don?t. The cod liver oil of fish recently though has been considered as one supplement that definitely works. These supplements are generally known as the crop of up and coming supplements. They are somewhere replacing the natural nutrition by giving us nutrition directly and not in the form of any food. However, make sure you consult a health care provider before going ahead and consuming them.
Joint pain supplements mildly stimulate cartilage growth in arthritis-damaged joints. This was all discovered during the 1970s. With the growth of science and the field of medicine, you hardly even have side effects from them anymore. They are safe to consume. These joint pain supplements also surprisingly help ward off Alzheimer?s and heart disease. That is a real plus to even relieving joint pain by inhibiting prostaglandin production. Some supplements even block inflammation at the joint capsule that would otherwise damage the joint. One can never deny food as the best source of getting the nutrition supplements. But when left with no other option considering our lifestyles, you can always go for these joint pain and bone health supplements. One also needs to take care that the body can only absorb a limited amount of calcium at one time. So consume these supplements in small doses. Do not consume excess of these supplements as they may be harmful. Also make sure you buy supplements, which are reliable and are branded ones. Don?t just go for any bone health or joint pain supplement.

Surprise, grapes have been studied and noted for their value, both medicinal and nutritional for a very extended age. The incredible resveratrol is a product of grapes. That?s fair these studies are not just recent, however go back to olden times; much to the Egyptians whose consumption of grapes for thousands of years has been documented by historians. That is since they believed in grapes medicinal powers.
The Greeks also found grapes to be healthful and both Greeks and Egyptians used them as an ointment and the leaves were used to stench bleeding and pain. Green unripe grapes were used for sore throats and, of direction, raisins (dried grapes) were used for many conditions like cancer, cholera, kidney and liver disease just to designation a hardly any. Though red grapes were consumed mostly in the form of red wine, grape seed supplements are another path to reap the benefits of Resveratrol.
Grapes are really native to Asia and were brought to the Americas and Europe. Ripe grapes are green, purple, or red. We are looking at red grapes, since they contain Resveratrol. Therefore, since during the red wine making action, the skin of red grapes stays in the mixture longer than that for making white wine. The Resveratrol comes from the skin of the grape; therefore, more of the supplement is contained in red wine.
There are other foods that contain some of the Resveratrol, such as peanuts, cranberries, and black berries. However red grape and red wine contain the most. It would be dense to consume enough red grapes or grape juice to achieve sufficient amounts of Resveratrol to provide any heart healthy benefits. You can also find Resveratrol in supplement form. This is exceptionally useful for those persons who do not drink alcohol.
According to researchers, drinking red wine in moderation can raise HDL or excellent cholesterol and also stop artery hurt caused by HDL the type of cholesterol that we demand to avoid. Also studies have shown that the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption are more positive with red wine than with other sources of alcohol. This is certainly not to affirm that non drinkers should commence using alcohol just for imaginable heart health benefits. Another study tested whether consuming grape seed extract, chromium, or a combination of both would be effective in lowering cholesterol. The combination may be more effective; however, there needs to be more research before that can be established.
Smokers are another tale. The effect of grape seed extract supplement in a recent study was shown to lower LDL cholesterol levels in these smokers.
This is only the tip of the iceberg with Resveratrol or grape seed extract. There are so many ongoing studies and research focusing upon health issues such as the antioxidant content of red wine and grape seed extract and how it would impact cancer, aging skin, edema, diabetes, and infections just to designation a hardly any. If you are suffering with any of these conditions Resveratrol could be the answer to aid you.
Using supplements in the daily diet is a personal choice; however, whenever adding a supplement or any other product to your routine should be discussed with your health attention provider.
James Brown is retired from the US Air Force and is passionate about matters relating to health and fitness. NEW YORK (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday disregarded a U.N. warning to avoid incendiary rhetoric and declared ahead of the annual General Assembly session that Israel has no roots in the Middle East and would be "eliminated."
In remarks to reporters in New York, Ahmadinejad also said he did not take seriously the threat that Israel could launch a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities, denied sending arms into Syria, and alluded to Iran's threats against the life of British author Salman Rushdie.
The United States quickly dismissed the Iranian president's comments as "disgusting, offensive and outrageous."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted Israel could strike Iran's nuclear sites and criticized U.S. President Barack Obama's position that sanctions and diplomacy should be given more time to stop Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Iran denies it is seeking nuclear arms and says its atomic work is peaceful and aimed at generating electricity.
"Fundamentally we do not take seriously the threats of the Zionists," Ahmadinejad said. "We have all the defensive means at our disposal and we are ready to defend ourselves."
On Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Ahmadinejad and warned him of the dangers of incendiary rhetoric in the Middle East.
Ahmadinejad did not heed the warning and, speaking to reporters through an interpreter, alluded to his previous rejection of Israel's right to exist.
"Iran has been around for the last seven, 10 thousand years. They (the Israelis) have been occupying those territories for the last 60 to 70 years, with the support and force of the Westerners. They have no roots there in history," he said, referring to the founding of the modern state of Israel in 1948.
"We do believe that they have found themselves at a dead end and they are seeking new adventures in order to escape this dead end. Iran will not be damaged with foreign bombs," Ahmadinejad said.
"We don't even count them as any part of any equation for Iran. During a historical phase, they (the Israelis) represent minimal disturbances that come into the picture and are then eliminated," Ahmadinejad added.
In 2005, Ahmadinejad called Israel a "tumor" and echoed the words of the former Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, by saying that Israel should be wiped off the map.
In Washington, White House spokesman Tommy Vietor denounced the Iranian president's latest comments and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Israel's security.
"President Ahmadinejad's comments are characteristically disgusting, offensive and outrageous. They underscore again why America's commitment to the security of Israel must be unshakeable, and why the world must hold Iran accountable for its utter failure to meet its obligations," Vietor said.
The United States also officially linked Iran's state oil company to the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a move that enables Washington to apply new sanctions on foreign banks dealing with the National Iranian Oil Company.
Later on Monday, Ahmadinejad addressed a high-level U.N. meeting on the rule of law, and his remarks there prompted a walkout by the Israeli delegation.
Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a brigadier general in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was quoted on Sunday as saying that Iran could launch a pre-emptive strike on Israel if it was sure the Jewish state was preparing to attack it.
Ahmadinejad said the nuclear issue was ultimately between the United States and Iran, and must be resolved with negotiations.
"The nuclear issue is not a problem," he added. "But the approach of the United States on Iran is important. We are ready for dialogue, for a fundamental resolution of the problems, but under conditions that are based on fairness and mutual respect."
"We are not expecting a 33-year-old problem between the United States and Iran to be resolved in a speedy fashion," he said. "But there is no other way besides dialogue."
Obama will underscore his commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and address Muslim unrest related to an anti-Islamic video in his speech to General Assembly on Tuesday, the White House said.
'BULLYING COUNTRIES'
In his address to the meeting on the rule of law, Ahmadinejad said states should not yield to international law as imposed "by bullying countries." He is due to speak at U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday.
In the past, Ahmadinejad has used his U.N. speeches to defend Iran's nuclear program and to attack Israel, the United States and Europe. He has also questioned the Holocaust and cast doubt on whether 19 hijackers were really responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001.
Western envoys typically walk out of Ahmadinejad's speeches in protest.
Ahmadinejad said on Monday that Iran - under U.N., U.S. and European Union sanctions over its nuclear program - is used to economic restrictions and was not severely affected by them.
"The conditions in Iran are not as bad as they are portrayed by some," Ahmadinejad said, adding that his country can survive without oil revenues.
Ahmadinejad added that Iran's economy was in much better shape than that of the EU, which he said was "on the verge of disintegration and collapse."
There will be high-level side meetings on Iran's nuclear program and the Syrian conflict during the General Assembly, but U.N. diplomats do not expect either issue to be resolved soon.
Ahmadinejad's annual visits to New York, a city with a sizable Jewish population, are routinely met with protests against his anti-Israel rhetoric.
The New York Post newspaper said on Monday it tried unsuccessfully to deliver to his delegation a Jewish-themed welcome basket containing traditional Jewish foods, such as Gold's Borscht and Manischewitz Gefilte Fish, as well as a ticket to the off-Broadway play "Old Jews Telling Jokes."
'WE SEEK PEACE IN SYRIA'
The United Nations and Western officials have accused Iran of supplying weapons to Syria's pro-government forces, while Syria's government has accused Qatar and Saudi Arabia of arming rebels determined to topple President Bashar al-Assad.
Ahmadinejad rejected the charge that Iran was sending arms to Syria. "The so-called news that you alluded to has been denied vehemently, officially," Ahmadinejad said to a question.
"We see both sides as equally our brothers," he said. "The intervention and meddling from outside have made conditions that much tougher. We must help to quell the violence and help ... (facilitate) a national dialogue."
Ahmadinejad was also asked about a move by an Iranian religious foundation, in response to the "The Innocence of Muslims," to increase its reward for the killing Rushdie.
"Where is he now?" Ahmadinejad asked of Rushdie. "Is he in the United States? If he is, you shouldn't broadcast that for his own safety.
Rushdie, an Indian-born British novelist who has nothing to do with the video, was condemned to death in 1989 by Khomeini, Iran's late leader, over his novel "The Satanic Verses," saying its depiction of the Prophet Mohammad was blasphemous.
Ahmadinejad also addressed the issue of a California-made anti-Islam video, "The Innocence of Muslims," that has sparked anti-American protests around the Muslim world. He appeared to reject Washington's position that while it condemns the video's content, freedom of expression must be upheld.
"Freedoms must not interfere with the freedoms of others," Ahmadinejad said. "If someone insults, what would you do? ... Is insulting other people not a form of crime?"
Iran has a two-term limit for presidents. Ahmadinejad, widely seen as out of favor with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, ends his second term next year. "But that does not mean I will be separating myself from politics," he said.

New Zealand Post plans to extend its YouShop internet shopping delivery service so Kiwis can easily buy from online retailers based in Europe, Asia and Australia as well as in the United States.
The move is another blow to traditional shop owners, many of whom argue they are unfairly disadvantaged because most purchases under $400 made through overseas websites are GST and duty-free.
YouShop, unveiled earlier this month, lets Kiwi shoppers buy from US online stores that either won't deliver to New Zealand or have high shipping charges. Shoppers ask for purchases to be delivered to an address in the US, from which NZ Post forwards them to their home.
The service is being provided through a partnership with Singapore Post which runs the warehouse in Oregon used for deliveries.
NZ Post spokesman John Tulloch said Singapore Post had delivery centres in other major markets and NZ Post planned to extend YouShop to support purchases from "several other countries".
It had not intended to market YouShop till next year, but Tulloch said interest had been high since its existence was reported by BusinessDay.
Some customers were frustrated that some US online stores did not accept overseas credit cards, but Tulloch said there was a possible solution for that as well.
In addition to forwarding purchases, Singapore Post also acts as a payment intermediary, through which consumers can buy from sites that have such restrictions.
"They pay the vendor. We haven't got that functionality yet and it is not something in the current plan". But NZ Post might look at it, he said.
Retailers Association spokeswoman Louise Evans McDonald said it wanted the tax-free threshold reduced or eliminated but would not criticise NZ Post for capitalising on the overseas e-shopping trend. "If they weren't doing it, somebody else would be," she said.
US air freight company i-parcel, which runs a competing forwarding service called Prezoom from a warehouse in Delaware, said it would also extend that service "imminently" so New Zealanders would be able to have purchases sent on from a delivery address in Britain.
YouShop charges $23 to forward a 500 gram package from the US.? Prezoom charges $19.50, although a Taranaki shopper said patrons should be aware it could charge more for large, light items, after he was surprised by a $28.50 bill for delivery of a 200 gram lightbulb.
Prezoom launched its forwarding service early in September and said last week that 800 New Zealanders had registered within a week.

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - "Something has clearly gone wrong," Jon Cryer said as he accepted his award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
He was modestly referring to the debatable decision to choose him over comic geniuses like Larry David and Louis C.K. But he could easily have been talking about the entire Emmys telecast.
It was hideous. Television had a very good year, and this was not the show it deserved.
But hey: If the television academy truly thinks Cryer is funnier on "Two and a Half Men" than any of his competitors (who included Don Cheadle, Alec Baldwin and Jim Parsons), then this was exactly the kind of show they deserved.
The show did have plenty of drama, in the form of a few wins that strained believability.
Voters denied "Mad Men" what would have been a record-setting fifth-consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, piling prizes on "Homeland" instead. That wasn't a crazy decision, but it was debatable given a stunning year for both "Mad Men" and its AMC neighbor, "Breaking Bad."
Perhaps the Emmys were bound to have an off year, after the last two telecasts were entertaining. "Mad Men" wasn't the only one Sunday to have a streak broken.
Among the first talents wasted during the ceremony were those of Amy Poehler and C.K., who noted as they handed out the night's first award that they could set the tone. (The joke was that C.K. seemed totally uninterested, which he probably was.)
But the tone had already been set with a bad opening skit: It featured host Jimmy Kimmel getting Botox, and actresses punching him until his face went back to normal.
Kimmel won back some goodwill with his monologue, but it wasn't as funny as his typical monologue on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." And he lost almost all of that goodwill with a series of routines throughout the show that put all of the focus on him.
It might have seemed a good bet that he would be funnier than most people in the room, given how good he is on his own show. But his bits fell flat again and again, including one in which he had his parents ejected from the theater, with help from "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan.
He also tried to pull a prank on people who were on Twitter but not watching the show, by getting viewers to tweet that Morgan had collapsed. Like many of the jokes on the show, it was a one-joke premise - and Morgan, lying inert on the stage, was in no position to punch it up.
But that joke wasn't as dead as one in which Kimmel staged an "In Memoriam" to himself. We got it: He was still alive. But showing clip after clip didn't heighten the joke, just repeated it.
Not that the real "In Memoriam" was that much better. Ron Howard delivered a nice tribute to Andy Griffith before it began.
But did Griffith really stand so far above the other entertainment icons who died this year that it made sense to single him out? Like Kimmel's bit, it diminished the impact of the rest of the segment.
The tone was so off throughout the night that the funniest moment may have been a sketch featuring the murder of Don Knotts, who died for real in 2006. A sketch about "The Breaking Bad Show" imagined the AMC meth drama set in Andy Griffith's black-and-white Mayberry.
A few winners and presenters did get laughs. Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert held Jon Stewart by the legs to try to keep him from reaching the stage to collect the umpteenth award for "The Daily Show." Poehler and Julia Louis-Dreyfus staged a clever routine in which Louis-Dreyfus - accepting the award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series - read Poehler's speech instead of her own. And Jon Hamm and Tina Fey had a fun bit about Fey forgetting her glasses.
Many of the winners delivered speeches that sounded heartfelt, notably Cryer, "Breaking Bad's" Aaron Paul and "Modern Family's" Eric Stonestreet.
Other than that, there was much too much wrong.

MEXICO CITY - An earthquake shook parts of southern Mexico on Saturday, causing buildings to sway gently in the capital but causing no immediate reports of damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 7:30 a.m. (8:30 EDT; 1230 GMT) with a magnitude of 5.4. It was centered about 16 miles (25 kilometers) north of Pinotepa Nacional, a city near the Pacific Coast, and about 210 miles (340 kilometers) south-southeast of Mexico City.
Mexico's national seismology service initially calculated the quake's magnitude as 5.8 and said it was centered southwest of Pinotepa Nacional.
